How Government Kills Poor Farmers: The GM Genocide

If prostitution is the oldest profession of civilization, than agriculture is the second oldest profession of the human world.
Farming is especially important because basically all other economic sector of a market interlinks with agriculture in some way or other. Everybody needs food.
The tyranny of government is, it controls both prostitution and Agriculture.
Let me explain how government interventions causes havoc and brings upon death of poor. Yes, let us talk of GM genocide.
princecharlesWhen Prince Charles claimed thousands of Indian farmers were killing themselves after using GM crops, he was branded a scaremonger. The so-called nationalists blamed him to be suffering from superiority complex. Many Indian Socialists claimed he is disrespecting India and is being sick of jealousy against a prosperous India.
Yet, now when every Indian knows how farmers are committing suicides continuously and even at present, every day 46 farmers commits suicide in India EVERY DAY on an average.
It all started with the environmentalist’s fake call of global warming and governmental support for it. As Government started subsidizing ethanol and oil rich seeds production in agriculture, more and more farmers, in order to make maximum profits, started producing Soya been, corn and other ethanol/oil rich seeds. Subsidies created a false demand of oil rich seeds, and the genuine demand of other food grains was reduced.
As a result, the prices of food grains increased causing inflation in food articles. It affected the poor in cities as they had little money to buy the most basic article like food. So in order to help the poor, government again subsidized food grains for poor, and governments started selling wheat and rice at lowest possible prices. A farmer the producer cannot decide the price for his product.
Now grain production was declining, and demand was increasing as always. Yet, someone had to pay for the “actual” price of the production of food grains, and that increased further inflation, as tax payers were stressed to pay for the food grains which were being distributed almost free in poor.
In order to increase the production of food grains and other crops, Government invested in improving technology of seed production, and there came the “magic seed” the GM crop seeds.
GM seed is a technologically improved seed that is assumed to provide better, proficient and healthy crops—free from parasites, pests and insects.
Indian central government and states government as a policy to improve agriculture promoted GM seeds and almost banned traditional seed varieties from governmental seed banks. As agriculture is completely under government and hence a monopoly, there remained no alternative for farmers but to use GM seeds.
Indian government begged International Monetary Fund loans in 80’s and 90’s helping to launch economic revolution to remove poverty. In return, government promised to promote GM seeds. As always government bureaucracy and politicians embezzled, wasted most of the loans.
indian-farmersIt further increased government’s desperation to promote GM seeds.
Now GM seeds are not as cheap as traditional seeds and other technological variants which government banned. Poor farmers faced difficulties in buying these seeds and they had no other option left too. Thus, in order to help farmers, government promoted/forced banks to provide agriculture loans to farmers at easier process and interests. All this was done as a government policy to “help poor farmers and remove poverty”.
Far from being ‘magic seeds’, GM pest-proof ‘breeds’ of cotton have been devastated by bollworms, a voracious parasite. Nor were the farmers told that these seeds require double the amount of water.
Thus, the experiment of GM seeds failed miserably, and alas! Government was promoting it since long with complete monopoly on the system avoiding any other alternative for farmers.sad_indian_farmer
There was one more ditch for farmers by government. When the traditional crops failed in past, the farmers still could save the seeds from the crop and replant them in next year. But with GM seeds, farmers couldn’t do that because GM seeds have been genetically modified so that the resulting crops do not produce viable seeds of their own. As a result, farmers have to buy new seeds each year at the same punitive prices. For some, that means the difference between life and death.
Now, farmers were under debt of bank loans, or traditional money lenders.
They had no option left but either to sell their lands and pay the loans back and buy some more seeds to try for their luck once again. Few farmers, who could face the dire situation in a year, had to face same situation in next year. Moreover, this stress was enough to make them kill themselves.
In order to decrease the farmers suicidal rates, government had to do something, otherwise they could loose election and hence power.
Therefore, government started coercing banks and harassing them in order to promote banks to “help” farmers, being lenient, forgiving the bad loans. As we all know, coercion never helps, because of bad loans and unproductive assets, banks started facing the credit crunch and liquidity crisis. Now government blames banks for their bad and losing assets, while government never accepts that it was government that forced banks to promote bad assets and malinvestment and farmers continues to commit suicide. Well yes, government got a new way to remove poverty, as poor farmers commit suicide, poverty decreases.
Not only that, various freelance non-governmental scientists associations have provided evidences time to time that GM crops[1] are not that better and safe as the mainstream government supported scientists stresses on them, yet government neglects.
happy-in-her-own-world“How Free market would have been better”
1> In absence of government interventionism, GM seeds might have gained entrance in Indian farms, but traditional seeds and other technologically advanced seeds might not have been banned thus, providing farmers better options. A failure of some farmers using GM seeds might have saved other farmers to get in the trap. Hence, save them.
2> In absence of governmental ban for other seeds, there might have been a healthy competition to remove defaults of GM seeds and helping farmers better professionally and profitably.
3> In absence of governmental subsidies, farmers might not have been lured in producing the subsidized crops hence avoiding false demand problems.
4> In absence of governmental coercions and RBI interventions, banks might not have promoted undeserving loans to create bad assets, hence farmers might not have been lured to take further loan stresses.
5> In absence of IMF loans, government and bureaucracy might not have had embezzled millions, hence creating national debt and stress over Indian tax payers.
6> In absence of government interventionism in market, India might have been better placed to face any economic crisis.
7> In absence of government interventions, poor might not have been committing suicides.
What was expected from Government?
It’s a known fact, that Government interventionism in economic sector causes havoc.
Government’s role must be to protect Individual rights, so that no one may exploit the individual rights of any other. As individual rights of freedom are always based on property rights, it requires government to stop interventionism in economic sector and stress more on creating a safe, free environment for the establishment of freedom for individuals. Only responsibility of government must remain to keep a look and hear any problem of Individuals if they claim to be economically-exploited by any other person or corporate or enterprise, and to judge the situation specially on the basis of right to property, the fundamental bases of right to freedom.
If Market remains free, it acquires enough potential to solve any crisis by itself.

This is a complex subject which I have thought about writing for some time and then gave up. I may not agree with the solutions but I like the way you have analysed the issue.

Well Nita, in this particular post, I have not discussed the solutions yet.
I will discuss the solutions to the present situation and problems later.

At present, government has allready done mistakes by intervening in Agriculture market and completely monopolizing it. Now when government has caused such a great loss of humanity, life and honour for Indian farmers, it need to do something or other. And for doing that it will keep harassing the other sectors of market and us The common Individuals, the Tax payers.

But the thing is, it won’t help the farmers. it will ruin further other markets too.
