The news network “The Telegraph” is highlighting some scientific research studies, which claims that the monstrously destructive 7.9 Mw magnitude earthquake that hit Sichuan Province in China last May was the result of the Communist Party’s insistence on building the Zipingpu dam in 2004.1
It adds 80,000 more deaths in the bag of murderous communistic-socialistic mixed economy systems.
We all know how destructive that Earthquake was, people whole round the world tried to help the poor victims of that natural tragedy. Yet the scientific studies suggest that, that earthquake was not a natural tragedy but was the result of the Communistic state tyranny. The earthquake killed 80,000, displaced a million and has had resonating political impact in China. The people of China protested openly against the Chinese Single Party Communistic government set-up after the earthquake.
We all know how sluggish Chinese government response was when the international NGO’s tried to provide help for the poor victims of the earthquake. Now the scientific studies shows, why the government was so adamant. Was China government trying to avoid displaying the corruption, ill-management and failure of communism and big government statist system?
The seismic fault present in Sichuan Province has not showed any seismic activity since millions of years, the earthquake was very unusual for that area.
There are enough scientific evidences, which suggest that the Zipingpu water reservoir was the main reason behind the earthquake.
Zipingpu is only one of nearly 400 hydroelectric dams in that earthquake zone.
Researchers and scientists have warned the China government many times about the situation yet government never cared.2
It clearly shows how the Big Governmental planned Big Projects hurts environment and the human society.
This is not only the case of China; unscientifically high water reservoirs and their impact have caused earthquakes and deaths all over world. Indian Bhakra Dam is also not free from such accusations and Koyna Dam was considered the main cause of Koyna Earthquakes3 and the current Narmada Bachao andolan leaded by Medha Patkar and Arundhati Roy is also just a consequence of the fact that the state sponsored big projects often causes damages of life, property and nature.4
There have been enough evidences and scientific reason provided for the government that why should the Narmada project be abolished, yet Indian government is also persistent.
The Telegraph article shows that even USA citizens have suffered a lot because of the Big Government projects. There is history of earthquakes caused by the Dams including several caused by the construction of the Hoover dam in the US.5
Now again, China and USA under their respective economic stimulus plans are going to create further new Big Government sponsored projects. We can surely imagine how much disaster these government sponsored infrastructure may cause.
The current example of China disaster is yet another evidence of the fact, that collectivism can never be profitable. Socialism-communism is the biggest killers of Humanity on the earth.
Some of the site-readers here have suggested many times that mixed economy works as it is working for China.
I hope they notice the reality of the Middle Vice.6
The Wikipedia page related to the Earthquake Disaster and its relation with Chinese government and corruption clearly shows that not only India but China also is suffering from extreme corruption7 and why not? Collectivism is a synonym of corruption; communism-socialism is synonym of disaster.
We have specifically shown how all the major scarcity of water in India is only because of government’s ill big-projects and unethical tax-subsidies cycles. We have shown how there can be no water scarcity if government stop interfering in economic sector and the natural resource management.8
When we discuss global warming, people mentions the problem of collective action.
In free market, there would be enough incentives and reason for entrepreneurs and owners of the natural resources to not to build dams that burst at the seams, undoing all their work and wealth invested within only five years. No private entrepreneur can afford such loss hence he is forced to take any action reasonably.
Yet, when collective static governments manage the natural resources, they find no incentive to look for reason, viability and profit or loss of a project.
In the current phase of economic crisis, China government has again announced big stimulus plan under Keynesian economic policies to invest in similar Big infrastructural, less worthy projects just to raise up the spending, in November China government announced $146.5 billion to be invested again, although the government construction works in China are facing serious corruption allegations because of which the school buildings collapsed during the earthquakes causing major harm. 9 Meanwhile, Obama lead USA government is also planning some similar projects. Governments should learn from the past-mistakes, it is not only about wasting tax-payers money, such big-government projects actually harm the environment and healthy-safe living of the citizens too. Time will shows us again, how the static government mixed economy system breaches the sanctity of human life.

China is still trying, in vain, to control corruption with death sentence. Gong by the magnitude of the punishment, corruption must seriously be a BIG problem, like how this survey says (China ranked at 72, along with India and a few other countries): http://www.transparency.org/news_room/in_focus/2007/cpi2007/cpi_2007_table

February 7th, 2009 at 2:25 amSo you are okay with opposing big projects in the name of opposing socialism but not as environmental activism ? Are you not aware that a lot of environmentalism stresses on local populations managing their resources, instead of big government coming in with ‘state owned enterprises’.
I also agree with you on the massive ‘infrastructure’ spending so vehemently stressed by the World Bank, IMF and the media, <ahref=”http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/06/world/asia/06japan.html”>this article</a> in the NYT has a very good perspective on the results of overinvestment in Japan.
But I disagree that the state should not invest at all, there are some areas in which only the state has the moral authority or moral responsibility to invest in. Also resources have to be under the control of local people not monetary profit-driven crony capitalists.

February 7th, 2009 at 11:42 pmit depends on whether you consider “compulsory taxation” as a moral act or Immoral act.
if state needs to invest money, it can be done properly, logically and morally only if the taxations are NOT compulsory but VOLUNTARY.
That is, state need to find out various possible plans where it may invest and ask for voluntary contribution from citizens. The citizens interested in that plan may contribute freely, or they may decide to not to contribute. some citizen may decide not contributing direct money, but they may work for the project contributing in form of man-labor which in case of productivity is a wealth. Also that plan can in noway be forcible on those who do not agree with it in any sense, in terms of ideal free society. As for example, if state directs a space-shuttle programme, it should demand direct investment from the citizens. The interested citizens acessing the capability of scientists involved may invest in it. By investing freely, they become the profitable (or failure if the project fails) shareholders of the project. if project gains profits, that is, if the programme of space shuttle gets a positive run and state then get in position of commercializing the project to provide a space-roaming service for common citizens, the citizens who invested in it initially, enjoys the profits of the enterprise. it simply means that in free market, people/citizens/individuals have freedom to gather and make a profitable enterprise, but that enterprize holds no special rights over other enterprises.
In case of compulsory taxation in which we live, state owns all rights and none is hold by citizens. Citizens are investing machine with no right to access the workability and profit chances of a venture started by state. In lack of answerable responsibility, state enterprises suffers from monopolistic failure involves corruption and becomes the cause of suffering in some way or other.
