Now think about this for a second……and not a knee jerk answer of …….. “Of course I can handle the truth.”
How many times have you asked someone…? How are you today?….Do you really want to know…or are you asking just to be polite……..What would you feel and think if that person told you all about their new colostomy bag and all of the problems they were having with it, their hemorrhoids are flaring up, and they wet the bed last night??
Would you feel imposed upon, or perhaps be thinking …what have you gotten your self into, roll your eyes and try and extricate your self as quickly as you possible???
So…do you really want to know the truth????
Or perhaps you only want the veneer of the truth……..all of the things that make you comfortable and pigeonhole snugly into your own world order??
So on to more serious things….
What if you ask someone to tell you the truth……and that truth is not to your liking. How do you respond?? Would you prefer a smile, a polite answer and never knowing…..or a truth that may not go down so well??
I think the quality of truth we receive, lays not so much in the hands of the people telling us the truth……….but in ourselves……..can we ourselves handle the truth?
The truth lays in how we ourselves except and respond to the information given to us. Do we respond in a way that encourages others to tell the truth… or do we respond in a way that encourages only ……..shades of the truth?
I’d rather know the unpleasant truth than be duped, and I’d rather know it than be taken by surprise.
I actually want an honest answer when I ask for it. That “fine and you” answer just doesn’t sit well when I know there is something behind it.
I don’t ask “how are you” just to be polite unless I just don’t know the person and meet him/her for the first time. Other than that circumstance I expect an honest answer.
But then…I remember being asked, “How are you doing?” To which sometimes I was oh so tempted to respond, “Not good! Sit down and let me tell you all about it.” Just thinking of that “fictitious” response would help put a smile on my face. Most of the people that asked were concerned only on the surface. As long as I was smiling, everything must be okay.
It’s the friends that see beyond the superficial facade and ask the questions that are really burning to be answered that make my heart grow. These are the ones that are the true diamonds (just any ‘ol gem won’t cut it here)! These friends are rare, at least for me, but they are the ones I cherish for all eternity. Even if I don’t go into a long and drawn out description of what ails me, I know they truly do care!
So, my opinion is that not many of us can actually handle the truth, especially if we understand the possible consequences. Most will claim to only want the truth, as I have many times, only to in the end wish I had never asked in the first place. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
I’d rather not know the unpleasant truth than know it.
But I’d rather know the unpleasant truth than be duped, and I’d rather know it than be taken by surprise.
If ignorance is bliss, then I vote for ignorance. But if there are consequences, then I want to be able to deal with them. If I have to look the devil in the face in order to do so, I will - but only if I have to.
I prefer the truth, however bitter it may be to swallow, to pretty lies. With truth however much it may hurt, it is the reality in which we live in. Uncomfortable truths are real and eventually you can learn to accept and move on- sadder but wiser. Lies hold you in their grasp and prevent this.

Rocking,
Yes ofcourse, in my chair, thinking how to get myself out of it indeed.
Faced it, yes, after exams, when somebody has not done well, and yet, i have to ask him about his performance.
Yes, we would ask, how are you, and if the answer is unpleasent, we would ignore it altogether, and this the way we handle truth.
The most common response to an unpleasent truth is blanking out.
Yes indeed.
What do I prefer? I do not know. Why do I ask? I do not know. Do I really care for anything else than my state of being? I do not think so.
Ultimately, we make friends to feel good about ourselves, and not to share sorrows. It comes as an effect of our action, and we are comfortable with it as long as we are gaining.
Liked the post, very much.

March 20th, 2008 at 6:56 pmhmm… its true these stereotyped questions and the expected answers come and go in our lives so much…
the genuinely interested person would know the truth without these customary question and its answer just like a parent knowing the child… may be these practices were created with a motive of not disappointing or disapproving the casual acquaintances …

April 9th, 2008 at 10:59 amSupposing that Truth is a woman - well, now, is there not some foundation for suspecting that all philosophers, insofar as they were dogmatists, have not known how to handle women?
Who can handle the truth?

April 9th, 2008 at 11:10 amThat is abvious.
Perceptions may differ and change but reason never changes, and only reason provides the truth.
better read the post before commenting.
and be in the bliss.

April 9th, 2008 at 11:14 amOh my.. Did I read the post!
What is perception, is the truth of the moment. And truth changes, every-single-moment!
Never mind.

April 9th, 2008 at 11:15 amWhat’s the time right now? Is it 3:21:23, oh no it has become 3:21:24, no no, 3:21:24 now…
But am I not telling the truth?

April 9th, 2008 at 11:18 amlol I didn’t expected such a bufoonery.
the time you are talking about is a relative human construct for the easeness of human.
The truth is, Time is a unique dimension beyond human world and is necessary aspect of universe, just like the three other dimensions.
The truth is, speed of time changes, and this all is physically proovable on qunatum basis.
remain in the bliss.

blaming your perception won’t let you free from the irresponsiblity you show against reason.
Perception doesn’t decide reality, Right perception based on reason decides it.
You may decide to remain in oblivion of bliss of ignorance, but stop the bufoonery as its highly over-rated.

April 9th, 2008 at 11:33 amReason pitches against reason.
When perception is mistaken as reason, there is no way out.
unpretentious_diva Says:
April 9th, 2008 at 11:37 amperception if based on reason can never be wrong and cannot variate.
What variates is the ability to understand reason.
And reason never conflicts, reason are to sort out the confusing perceptions.
Reality is based on perception irrespective of your perception.
Abhinav Says:
April 9th, 2008 at 11:46 amMost of our so-called reasoning consists in finding arguments for going on believing as we already do.
Go spoil yourself.
unpretentious_diva Says:
April 9th, 2008 at 11:58 aminstead of showing off all your ignorance you could have simply stated that you niether can percieve nor accept truth.
and yes reason are never so-called.
reason are verified facts.
keep saving your bliss ignorance and bufoonery.
