Hinduism, root word Hindu, derived from River Sindhu or Indus. Primarily Hindu was a geographical term referring to the land near Sindhu (India) which was coined in 6th century BC by Persians. In 19th century Hinduism got defined in dictionary as to explain the belief system of those Indians who were neither Christians, nor Islamists nor Judaist nor Zoroastrians. Even Hindus do not call Hinduism as some religion. They say they follow Santana Dharma, Dharma is a Sanskrit word which means Moral Order, or Right Action. The Hindu custom encourage Hindus to search for sacred and moral truth wherever it might be found, while admitting that no dogma can contain such truth in its fullness and that each individual must realize this truth through his or her own organized effort. According to Hindu philosophy, one’s experiences, reason and one’s conversation with others offers various ways of checking one’s understanding of spiritual and moral truth, and the Hindu scriptures (basically Vedas, Upanishads, Geeta, Ramayana) which are based on insight of Hindu sages and seers acts as guidebooks. Yet, Hinduism states that one gets the ultimate truth through the direct consciousness of the ultimate reality. That’s what I know about Hinduism. But then there’s a big mug-up in Hinduism with various schools of Hinduism and various definitions of Hinduism. And there is a socio-dictatorial term “Hindutva” too about which I know nothing. According to Supreme Court of India no precise meaning can be ascribed to the terms ‘Hindu’, ‘Hindutva’ and ‘Hinduism’ and no meaning in the abstract can confine it to the narrow limits of religion alone, excluding the content of Indian culture and heritage”
Basically, all religions are nothing but a strong try to contain the masses and rule over them. Religion were (and still are) the major tool of social shackles. As religion started loosing their grip over the commons, the socio-dictatorial/democratic system started gripping them. The grips can be of many types. Like George Orwell represented the case of Big Brother system in 1984, it can be totalitarian socialistic fool drum system as USA government is doing since 9/11. Bush regime has pushed 1984’s idea to extremes in USA. And it serves the purpose too. On the other hand, the Australian socio-dictatorial system is of just opposite theme of fake utopia which is almost acting on the theme of “The Brave new World” by Aldous Huxley. India still is reigning under religious and nationalistic tool of socio-dictatorial system. The rulers and contractors of Individuals either uses benevolence, social sympathy, religious bindings or caste based issues to get power and rule over the masses or they starts talking of emancipation and freedom against repressive caste system and zone system. Religion always proved to be a good tool to collect people and make collective power and elude them about common collectivistic good. Nationalism and Hindutva are such tools.
As Bertrand Russell suggested, communism/socialism is nothing new but similar to religious system to control and rule the masses, I completely agrees with that. In Skeptical Essays Bertrand Russell has referred Marx as a “clever politician”. Just like religious leaders fools public with an ultimate goal of ruling over them, Marx did the same by providing a socialistic dream of collectivistic system. But what is Dharma? I guess that’s what objectivity is! Dharma is to be civilized good human being. That good also is not subjective; it is very objective, good as right, righteous, good as virtuous, good as moralistic, and good as Independent. Yet, virtues and moral I do not think can be any sort of imperative duties; they are the pursuit of happiness.

Very Nicely written. Competition amongst different religions is resulting in riots & acts of brutality. Religion does more harm than good. But I advocate a different school of thought, people just need a reason to fight, religion being just one form.

The word Hindu’s original Persian meaning is ‘dog,’ ‘low life’ or ‘slave’.”

    Does it affect you?
In Hindi derivative, it still means the person living in geographical region besides the Indus River.
Anyways, certain biases may cause unnecessary conflictions!
It’s not at all necessary to call oneself Hindu on the geographical region terminology. Who needs such identities?
But if someone uses and enjoys it, then I do not recognize it as racial slur!
Persian language and Persia is gone!
I speak Hindi; I find it best and most loving language!
People may call it dog’s/low profilers/slaves language though!
    Who cares for their irrationalities?
    And yep I am Atheist

nicely written… its something like a ‘state of fear’. its easier to rule over the people, when you can unite them against a common enemy. if there is no common enemy, then create one! :)

    i like the religion-communism comparison.

personally, id like to be an atheist…

religion, for one, is a good thing, but then we have riots, communal fights, etc

this is the sad part, people dont understand, they just tend to fight in the name of their religion…..

  9. suren Says:

rightly said.. hinduism is actually a way of life and not a religion per se and this customs and practices have found their way into other religions too

  10. prachi Says:

    another post on social issues..
ive gt a question for ya.

Wud this world , have been a better place, if everyone was an atheist?

  14. Me Says:

    @proneet
it is your problem if you do not understand difference between atheist and rationale.
A theist can be a rationalist.
But an irrational person just cannot be peaceful.
I wonder why you can’t read the post.
Where the question of thiest/atheist is there?
May people learn to seek answers themselves instead of making irrelevant questions and demanding for dogmas and indoctrinations!
Till when will they demand spoon feeding?
One more thing for you, stop restricting on my subjects of writing. I write what I feel about.

    You understand that?

  15. Me Says:

    @Proneet
Yes, It might have been much better place. Religion, any of the religion has done nothing good for humanity or society ever. Whatever it has done is trash and harm.
And now stop your dictatorial attitude. You aren’t a Hitler, and don’t try to be, because there’s many Einstein to blast your ass!
And what you are calling a grape yard actually is a graveyard which is suffocating, and needs proper ventilation , which can be produced by removing the black closed doors of religion.

  16. Me Says:

    @proneat
ego is a sense of possession. you can’t have it, and I know that. why are you whinning about it?
    Don’t hurt yourself kid.

  17. nirbhay Says:

    Actually…
Hinduism is not at all a religion like Islam or Christinity…
The Aryans have won the battle against the “Mool Niwasi”Indians.and formed their habitat here in india.
Hinduism is more or less nothing but Aryanismmmmmm!
    I think so…
    nice to read it …
    Bye…….

  18. Shayan Says:

I would say exactly what Nirbhay has written …… Hinduism IMO is not even a religion & its shown by the Supreme Court as well !!

    Hinduism is a tradition…..every religion has a founder….Hinduism has none…so…

  19. hitesh Says:

    Very nicely written post…..
    enjoyed reading….
Its true that hinduism is not really a religion as others but a way of life and a belief system….

  20. Attila Says:

Minor nitpick, but shouldn’t it be Al-Hind or Hindusthan that was a geographical term and not Hindu, which would’ve stood for a person?

You could’ve added Veer Savarkar’s definition of Hindu as any person who stays in India.

    असिंधू सिंधु पर्यनता यश्य भारत भूमिका,
    पित्रिभु पुण्य भुस्चैवा सा वाई हिन्दू रीती स्मृतः।

There is a vast land between river Sindhu and Hind Mahasagar called Bharat and those who accept that this is their fatherland or / and a holy land, land of pilgrimage are all Hindu.

I agree with the view though, that religion as a whole is a means to control people. On the positive side, it can help maintain diversity and preserve cultural heritages.

Finally, as long as its practiced within the four walls on your room, it should not be a matter to anybody. But when its imposed upon others, its pure, undistilled tyranny. Sometimes I wonder, how long would it take before the common man realizes what deep muck he is in?
