I am amazed by how opionated you are considering that your exposure to the IAS is based solely on people who want to write the exam. There are a lot of officers who have worked honestly and transformed many lives. Anyway if you want to actually know what happens in the IAS you should considering this blog i came across.

Absolutely agree with Pragya (the above post)

It is quite clear as water that, those who blowed the trumpets of with words/phrases like "Useless government, stupid, corrupt bureaucracy.. etc" are just immature, short-sighted and restless.

There are inefficiencies everywhere. Though, IAS officers are involved directly in nation building and nation forming, they too are humans and are sometimes/most of the times, succumbed to the urge of greed and nepotism. And,practically speaking, many a times, they have to be corrupt or keep a blind eye to the corrupt practices visible to them. Else, they will be grudged against and are stepped down eventually. This is a hard reality.

But, it doesnt mean to say, hence there is no hope and necessity from these IAS officers for the nation. It is wrong to think that way.

It may be very hard to digest for many, but, it is possible to (and, practically, it is the only way)serve for your nation inspite of being corrupt at times, in some way or the other.

IAS officers are not (and are not expected to be) Gandhi or bahagat singh.

Conclusion: To all those criticizers of bureaucracy and government, anyway, you cant do anything more than just voice ur angst in forums like these.... so, IAS officers, corrupt or not-corrupt, your fate and, the environment in which you will have to live in India, will be decided by these select officers. So, why not do some productive work like the one you mentioned above... go, be a TATA or Ambani (the so-called nation builders)!!

yeah! i agree. if anyone want to be in an IAS. He should just forget about the money. He should serve all the people by his heart not by his money. he should be an honest officer otherwise of no use. There is no shortage of the corrupt officers but shortage of the honest ones. So, do not help increasing the number of the corrupt ones but help in increasing the number of not only the honest IAS officers but an honest Indian citizen.Serving the nation never means only by being in civil service and then serving,it means being honest and doing whatever your herat says. So, first of all be honest.

ias gives a power to frame policies of the country, take important decisions and implement the government policies effectively. ias is a service provided to the nation. if you are a true deshpremi, your mind is clear and full of pride on nation and if you have a good vision to make your country a 'superpower' in the world, no one can stop you from doing your work, the corruption will not distract your mind from your goal. remember- "jis saale me dam hai uska koi kuchh nahi bigad sakta"! jai hind jay maharashtra!

Dear Renagade_division , it is nice to see that you are a very opiniated person but my friend having an opinion about things is good however being dogmatic hmm I guess not. The points you raised about the market doing the wonders for an economy is absolutely right but for the nation as a whole , not really. Our's is a developing nation with more than 70% of its population lying in the villages. I am sure you are aware of this fact but my question is , if you are then how can you even dream of saying that these people are becoming better off with new MNC's coming around , with the rise of so called entrepreneur's who are certainly responsible for rise in economic growth but not in economic development . A man with an average earning does not care about how an economy is growing but how he can meet his daily requirements in terms of food, shelter and clothing . Basic necessity which you and I dont have to care for but these people sure do and here comes the role of Govt. or bureucrats per say . It is these bureaucrats who make policies with the help of economic advisories regarding how much food subsidies need to be granted and trust me these subsidies which you may raise several questions about it's authenticity is feeding thousands of families in our country who otherwise would have been starving. The NREGA an act which have ensured a daily wage for many was not started by any of your entrepreneur's (again there may arise many questions regarding how fair it is and so on) but my question is how many programms are started by these entrepreneurs to improve the lives of the poor , mark my word of the POOR and not an average citizen with minimum required education level. My friend , the famous keynsian theory which was resposible in reviving the US economy from 1930 great depression had no role of the market in it but it was the govt or state which played a vital role in reviving them .
My only point is that there is an endless list of what a bureaucrat can do and what an entrepreneur is capable of doing but what is important is a fact that neither an economy can grow without the help of entrepreneur's nor a govt. can work effeciently without the help of the same set of people . Economy and politics go hand in hand and IAS oficer's are the one who had to strike a balance between the two. Last but not the least if you are such an anarchist which I believe you are by reading your post ( correct me if I am wrong ) then all I can say is that for a better Govt. or a better system " ONE HAS TO BE IN THE SYSTEM TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM ". It is very easy to pin point from outside but difficult to take that task in our own hand and make it the way we like it.

it was just an ridiculuos experience to this para but i m appreciating to the truth which u have written and that also we know all this. But not to become an IAS officer is not the way to make our country successfull. If the uncorrupt peaple like us will not become administrative officer then who will handle the situation which are harming the country... exactly the thing is that we should be inspired to become an IAS officer so that we can make our country corruption free and purely democratic..

Hi guys
Seems there is some war between the guys supporting an IAS and an eunterprenuers. Alright before commenting anything I would like to say that I am a chemical engineering graduate from BITS Pilani(class 2010)(guys m not braggin please :D). I know a lot of my friends have started their own firm in bangalore and will surely be successful eunterprenuers in future. A EEE senior bagged 4th rank in UPSC and recently I friend of mine bagged Rs. 1 crore from some bank(obviously doller converted :P IIM A grad).

Coming to the point, being an IAS officer, an euterprenuer or an investment banker is purely an individuals ambition. U have to decide how u want to die(as among the above mention :D). Justifying your ambitions over others taking others names/profession is bullshit.

Well whatever u do, if u can live with it is kool. U can serve the nation by being any of the above. There is no debate over it.

Now coming to my short autobiography :P. I too wanted to become an IAS officer when I was in XIIth. I prepared for IIT JEE, ended in BITS. Now have given CAT n hopefully would fit in some IIM and then I plan to start a technology driven company. Yes Over the last 6 years, many times I thought of preparing for UPSC, eradicate corruption, fight against the corrupt politicians, remove social inequality by being an IAS oficer. But it's not so easy guys when u don't get even 10% of what an investment banker gets. At this point of time I can say I can help myself, my nation more effectively by being an eunterprenuer than being an IAS officer. This is just my case. No generalization please. If u think u can serve yourself and then nation by being an IAS officer and not an eunterprenuer, well go for it. :Respect.

"To conclude, u can do whatever u want to do(serving yourselves and nation) only if u r satisfied with your profession and do what u think is great work. There is no point fighting on threads like this and justfying 1s opinion."

PS: Chetan Bhagat an IIT/IIM grad leaves his job as an investment banker and is now writing books that is undoubtedly changing the society...Kool job!!!

@renegade_division
I read your views and trust me the desire within me to be an IAS officer grew few times stronger.
You are praising entrepreneurs, great. These men are visionaries, they create capital(not only wealth). I completely agree. They create employment and cause development on the nation ,say society(in a broader sense).Thats completely true.
You say "My life as an average Indian is not improved by another IAS officer, my life is much more improved by an entrepreneur who can create wealth, like Azeem Premji and Narayan Murthy." AVERAGE INDIAN !!!!!! REALLY !!!!
You consider yourself an average Indian.
According to the 2001 census, 74% of Indians live in villages. Thats where average Indian lives. And believe me, most of them have not got a mouth to speak as you do to improve their standard of life. Now you will say that business houses have lead to growth of many such villages. There are 638,365 villages in India so do the maths and see how many of villages are left untouched.
Business houses are completely profit driven organisations, completely profit driven.
Now someone needs to work for these people, work for their development, work to improve their life. Work like improving agricultural facilities for farmers who are 2/3 of entire population, providing education to illiterates.
And business houses don't do such things, instead they make a lame software saying it will help an adult to read in 40 hours to showoff their CSR. And how will that adult get access to computers sir. They don't care . This is the someone else's problem. Whose??
Now i know people who will argue that these villages will develop if entrepreneurs come out of such villages.
Thats just the height of day dreaming, here we are fighting for the most basic things which distinguish us from apes, food-clothing-house and you are talking for what ? entrepreneurship !! And dare not to give me examples of men who have done such things, think on realistic grounds. How can you expect from a man who has never seen a computer, to own a software industry.

GOOD EVENING
I DO NOT KNOW WHY SOME PEOPLE IN INDIA THINK THAT AN OFFICER IS ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRUPTIONS IN INDIA. EVERY FIELD HAS ITS OWN POLICES.LIKE WISE IAS IS ALSO IS AN OUTSTANDING FIELD; BECAUSE AN IAS CAN SERVE INDIA AND HE OR SHE CAN ELIMINATE ALL UN-NECESSITES WHICH ARE FLOWING [i.e.CORRUPTIONS] LIKE A RIVER ACROSS IN OUR COUNTRY. AN IAS CAN FUFIL ALL NEEDS TO PEOPLE [i.e.WHO ARE SINCERE IN THEIR JOB] WHEN HE IS GIVEN RIGHTS TO FIGHT AGAINST ALL UN-NECESSARY THINGS BY POLITICANS; MINISTERS .WE CANNOT JUSTIFY WHETHER AN IAS OFFICER IS FIT TO SUCH FIELD; BECAUSE HE OR SHE IS HAVING EXCELLENCE IN ALL OVER DEVELOPMENT[i.e.IN ALL AREAS]AS COMPARED TO POLITICANS.SO I KINDLY REQUEST YOU DONOT COMPARE AND COMMENT ON IAS WITH OTHER FIELDS IN INDIA NOT ONLY INDIA ALSO ALL OVER THE WORLD. AND I AM NOT SUPPORTING WHO ARE CORRUPTING INDIA.
THANKYOU.

I'm terribly sorry to say this but most of you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If any you opened your eyes and took a walk around rural india you'd see how much of a difference IAS officer's can make. When so many people live their lives on a thin margin even small changes mean a lot to them.
One reason why noone has a clue may be that IAS officer's usually work behind the scenes when it comes to drafting and implementing policies; successes and failures are attributed to politicians. A country as large, populous and diverse as India does not run by itself or by three or four people at the top.
Please understand that for a country to run successfully it needs a combination of good governance and business, and a government is often required to maintain a check and balance on industry.

I’m terribly sorry to say this but most of you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If any you opened your eyes and took a walk around rural india you’d see how much of a difference IAS officer’s can make. When so many people live their lives on a thin margin even small changes mean a lot to them.
One reason why noone has a clue may be that IAS officer’s usually work behind the scenes when it comes to drafting and implementing policies; successes and failures are attributed to politicians. A country as large, populous and diverse as India does not run by itself or by three or four people at the top.
Please understand that for a country to run successfully it needs a combination of good governance and business, and a government is often required to maintain a check and balance on industry.

Hey, ur ans is right. But thats not complete the question. As u said ur life is much more improved by entrepreneur and not by a bureaucrat, but the thing is IAS officers are enough able to cancel the permission to companies of azim premji or narayana murthy. Those are the senior IAS officers who gave permission to set up new indsutries in the country. And the decisions taken by IAS officers will directly effect lots of people directly..why dont u think in this way..So ur ans is not correct.Senior IAS officers are more powerful than Azim premji or Narayana murthy as they head department or ministry in the government and these people head only a company...

Nice to read so many diverse opinions.
I just want to add my own small bit.
We should not compare businessmen from governance of a country/ state.
Both are must and serve different purpose. Business for profit, innovation, creativity and benefits to people who are able to add value to business.
Whereas governance is about creating a right Environment, equal opportunity to all for exploitation, and most importantly for a sustainable society and collective benefits.
So please dont underestimate the importance of Instiutions like IAS however corrupt they are today, it reflects the mind of the people , you always see some differences between officers. Of course, if a district magistrate are given powers similar to a CEO, the same level of accountability and performance can be delivered by the same guy, but in IAS, the problems are that their masters are politicians, they are not meant to make money, but bring well being of overall society.
But if you want to serve more people, IAS provides more opportunities however difficult environment may be. Business cannot provide such a wider opportunity to understand people,s problem across level and provide a solution as the prioroties are money, mgmt, employees and hence provides only narrow opportunity to serve a society.

Hi,friend this should not be asked to others. If you want to become an IAS, just go for that. There are many officers who are honest and they are also dedicating their life for others. IAS is not for earning money or fame, its a service to society. Every good thing that people getting is just because of good IAS officers who work day and night for the welfare of others. Without their part no one in this country can get good food, education, living and so on. Narayana moorty or Azim Premji are doing good which is acceptable. But keep remember these lines, " Do you know the face of a driver who takes you to different place in a public bus, Do you know the sweeper who cleans your street where you reside, Do you know who are all sacrificed their life in Kargil war, Do you know who are all died in rescueing people from mumbai terrorist attack ", the only answer you can get for this is that they are Servants to Society who will care others and live for others than for themselves.
Not everyone in this world is bad. I believe that life is an opportunity to create a meaning, not money or wealth. Now its your decision to go for what you wish.
