Deep Impact
People just love to explore and take interest in any talks about situations of apocalypse.
And when such apocalyptic stories concerns with phenomenon of asteroids, it becomes classical, as people starts imagining dinosaurs.
Even Hollywood encashed this fact by the two super hit movies Armageddon of Bruce Willis and the other one was Deep Impact.
Whenever some astronomical scientist states something about asteroids coming near the Earth, the fear mongers starts playing there game. These fear mongers comes in different formats, some are astrologists with no scientific base, some are religious gurus discussing about the growing atheism and lack of faith, which they terms as the reason for the natural calamities.
According to Don Yeomans at NASA’s JPL, the asteroid 2007 TU24 will miss the Earth by about 530,000 km (334,000 miles) on January 29. (What’s the circumference of earth?)
The asteroid 2007 TU24 is not a massive one. It is negligible in comparison to earth. Asteroids of minimal size pass us at this distance all the time, and we suffer. No fires, no lightning, no earthquakes or any other apocalyptic sign… at least, no more than one would anticipate cropping up haphazardly. Asteroids of this size are only a problem if they hit us, or they might hit us in the future.
Yet, the scare monger who loves to create rumors discards all facts and creates an environment of anticipatory fear amongst the masses. The foretellers, the religious well-wishers start talking of astrology, worshipping, and sacrifices to avoid “destructions” by the so-called “evil-asteroid” attacking earth. Many make it a point of commercial profits. All sorts of blind faiths revolving round astrology, tarot cards, numerology etc become the tools of looters.
The cosmic catastrophes are a reality which is dependent on the basic natural forces namely the Electromagnetic forces, Strong or Nuclear forces, Weak forces and Gravity.
By the passing away of the asteroid from a distance of so large magnitude, there are absolutely no chances of any effect of strong and weak forces to act in between earth and satellite because of the fact that both Strong and Weak forces are short range forces.
Yet, the Gravity and Electromagnetic Forces can be discussed to some extent.
Even the moon exerts some tidal effects on earth. The reality is, the asteroid 2007 TU24 is of negligible size and mass in comparison to Moon. Furthermore, the asteroid will pass through a very great distance away from Earth. There is absolutely no chance of any sort of effect by that asteroid on the Earth, and hence any TV programme or net link or any public debate if is intended to cause any sort of worry about the passage of asteroid, and if any foreteller or astrologist is causing some cases of sacrifices or treasonable worshipping etc, then it is mere an example of superstition and blind faith. Passing of asteroids from near earth space, and even falling of negligibly small asteroids on Earth is a natural common phenomenon. It can be a case of cosmic catastrophe if the size of the asteroid be comparable, but in present case, there is absolutely no reason for any sort of worries.
