After all the ruckus of Parliament, the women’s reservation bill was passed on 9th of March. The brouhahas of the dramatic parliamentary debate over the women’s reservation and the consequential voting over it was no less dramatic than the fake emotional ‘atyachar’ so commonly used and seen in various reality TV channels shows. All seemed to be pre-planned and directed and well-executed, and the result was huge TRP coverage for the ongoing Parliamentary debate over the women’s reservation bill and every news coverage related to it. News channels declared the passing of the bill as a historical milestone in the Indian political arena. Every person was forced to get involved with the issue of reservation for the women and literary was forced to accept that reservation actually is a noble idea that may provide equality and will improve the society by any means. Those who opposed the bill were wilfully shown as villains and those who supported it were shown as the heroes for the women cause, and the main leader was obviously the bigwig of Congress Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.
The process of entitlements, reservations, and special privileges was shown as the process of liberty and hence the freedom of individual was virtually brutalized by means of the whip of reservation. More than 100 blue commandos were called to bundle out the villainous MP’s who were trying to offset and oppose the voting for the support of WRB (women’s reservation bill) in Rajyasabha, and in planned way, the opponents applied the most illogical and irrational way of opposition, their opposition was no less than ‘violent’. Nobody actually opposed the idea of reservation nor they supported the idea of empowerment of women, what all of the MP’s of Indian parliament were doing was an act to influence a particular voting sect or the other, and the winner came out to be the ruling party which facilitate the women’s reservation bill. Now Congress party may dream of getting most of the fairer votes in the upcoming elections, after all, they bribed the women of India by providing them special privileges over their male counterparts.
Is the Women’s Reservation Bill of any Worth?
Women’s reservation bill assures 33% seats of MP’s in the parliament to be reserved for the women, i.e., at least 33% of MP’s would be women from now on. Will that change the scenario of politics, will that make Indian parliament look better or say ‘more beautiful’? The reservation for women may soon be enforced in public sector services of India too and then it may be enforced in the private sector too while enforcing a law on private sector to make it compulsory that every genuine company or enterprise must provide at least 33% of their jobs to females.
Will that improve the society? As a matter of fact, such entitlements, special privileges and reservations divide and weaken the society, but this time, the attack is not on the society alone, it is directly an attack on the families of India. The reservation is not going to increase the employment but with the compulsion of at least 33% of jobs to be provided for women, the government will virtually force 33% of women of India to be the soul bread earners of their families. What will their husband do? Well they may choose to be house-husbands, or may choose to try for entrepreneurship. Will that provide equality of men and women in the society?
More importantly, is the equality a virtue.
“Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition.”1
Consequences: All this political drama of reservation and special privileges for women will weaken Indian society and Indian women. It will increase further egoistic clashes between the two genders and will decrease the familial harmony. The reservation for anyone itself is a curse to society but reservation for women will start cursing the families. There will be more divorces, more cases of unsatisfied, sad and deranged couples applying for divorces. It is not a good trend although it may increase the voting account of the political parties. When Indians must oppose reservation based on Caste, religion and birth, the politicians of India has forced Indians to think about reservation based on gender too.
The major humanitarian idea of no differentiation based on caste, creed, sex, religion, colour, ethnicity has been abused and the trend of specific privileges and entitlements for the gain of political vote banks has been enhanced. It is the process of weakening of Indian Individuals and the Indian society as whole, but the major victims will prove to be women alone. A woman full of ambition does not need any reservation to prove that she is able. By providing her reservation, it has been virtually proved that she is not able and she lacks ambitions.
Although feminism speaks the language of liberation, self-fulfillment, options, and the removal of barriers, these phrases invariably mean their opposites and disguise an agenda at variance with the ideals of a free society.

March 16th, 2010 at 12:03 amAgree with you totally. My female friends curse me and say that I’m not an Indian Woman and I’m heartless! I want Indian women to progress because of ability and not by favors. The fact that the bill has been passed shows that we love mediocrity..my fear is that an inefficient woman might get a preference over an efficient man..
in a way, the reservation is a complete contradiction to equality!

March 28th, 2010 at 12:55 amYou mean to say that only wrong will come out of this bill and there will not be a single woman that will be helped by this bill? Intellectual debates and ground realities are often widely different. I agree that a strong woman will be able to make her way out in any circumstances. But what of the woman who desires to do something good, who does not have the sufficient courage to stand up against her society, culture and men and simultaneously fight for other woman? Will the women reservation bill not help her? I believe there is a large number of women out there who find them in such circumstances. Will these women not be able to help and aid further weaker women? Does a strong woman only has the right to live in freedom and not a weak one?

April 9th, 2010 at 12:04 pmI have serious issues with some your points. Hope you could able to answer them.
1. What is the problem if some men choose to be a house husband? Why there is a mentality that if women will start working then her family life will suffer and their will be more divorces. If this is the case, then the ladies in first picture, all must have been divorced till now. There are around 45% women in IT sector and it does not mean that their husband’s are househusbands and they are divorced. To save a marriage is the onus of both the partners.
2. Without any government compulsion, all the service sector industries are trying to increase the female ration in their organization. Not only India companies but MNC’s like Microsoft is hiring female employees in bulk, not because of any compulsion but to recognize her capability.
3. Because of increased participation of women in every sphere the condition of women has improved. Now she is raising her voice against any discrimination. There are only 44 women in Lok Sabha out of 543 seats. To represent almost 0.5 billion of population, we are having only 44 women.
4. Reservation is a curse, but it brought a big change in the society. There were times when the SC/ST class was totally oppressed and untouchable in almost all parts of the country. Thanks to the reservation that now we can find numerous SC/ST on good positions and in government job. This has changed the mentality of people a lot at least in cities and metros. Same can be applied to women, if there will be more women in parliament, then they will play a major role in government decision making and their status will eventually improved.
5. There is no doubt that ladies in the first picture are successful on the basics of their mettle but it is also a considerable fact that they all belong to well educated family and are themselves highly educated. Education and good family environment matters a lot in case of any person success, be it man or women. What about the poor and the middle class women who don’t know even their basic right just because of their lack of education and ignorance. These sections of women can relate themselves if there will be more percentage of women in parliament.

I never said there is any problem if some men choose to be a house husband, providing reservation to women doesn’t help men to choose to be house husband. Reservation is curse, it brings no good.
That is the point, you do not need forcing people to give way to women, they are capable enough to make their own way and society needs such women, society doesn’t need reservation. Reservation is curse it brings no good.
Condition of women was never bad if compared with the condition of all society during any period. Now when whole society is going through technological advancement, scientific living, every persona of the society irrespective of gender, caste, creed, religion etc are living much better life.
Even the “Adivasis” of Bastar uses mobile phone and automobiles.
Contribution of women in different sector increased because of the freedom the technological innovation provided for humanity in general. Now not every second person is dependent on living routine of dark ages.
Reservation is not going to improve situation, advancement of humanity on the scientific technological plane in general will improve it. Reservation, since thwarts the progress by compulsorily forcing better person to be out of job will decrease the process of advancement. Reservation is curse and harmful.
Not even an idiot will support your funny idea. Its not reservation but the technological and scientific advancement that brought great changes in social life all over the world. Reservation not even help women.
Didn’t you check the second picture? It also shows a highly succesful woman, who makes her and her family’s living by selling fruit juice on roadside. She did not need any qualification for being a successful woman. She gained her success with her shear hard work, honesty and self-respect. She didn’t beg like others for reservation.
In almost 45% households of India, women works and earns for their family. For your information, those women are not well educated, they works as labour, as househelpers, as shopkeepers, as entrepreneurs. They work in private enterprises, small sector industry, MNC’s and everywhere else without any reservation.
Reservation on the other hand is nothing but a curse, not only to the self-respect and ability of women, but to the whole society. Reservation weakens the generation.
Reservation means giving the job to the NON-DESERVING by snatching it from the deserving person.
If a Brahmin girl is denied a job because the job was reserved for a schedule caste, it is a curse, because the Brahmin girl although was more able, was denied the job just because she was Brahmin.
She was punished for being Brahmin. That’s discrimination. If an able man is denied a job for giving it to a lesser able woman candidate, than its similar discrimination.
Reservation increases discrimination, it increases disharmony too and raises enmity in social plane.

August 15th, 2010 at 12:58 amauthor’s opinion delibered the new face of Indian women and if it could be our reality than there should no requirenment of reservation. but India Lives in villages there max. women have no right to deliver their thoughts. Rajsthan former m.p.golma devi had to face problem than she had to resign.she did face the protest of their own cooleagues. In India whether women will become leader of village and .. but the reign wil be on man’s hand this reservation would be a proper initiative for them. sonia gandhi, prez Pratibha patil, patriot Laxmi bai and many other but we can count them on fingers. Man chauvinist society can not be changed in women’s society suddenly .favouring them and provide ample of opportunities will be compensation for they have been exploitating by not only man but also by the women from our ancistor’s time.it is not at all against womens prestige. for example if we provide reservation in Higher institution like IIT and IIM’S than appeariring there might be a matter of inferiorty complex but at the time of prepration curcumstances were diferent so we have to have reservation for them…..Romesh sahu Sagar
