This is the fourth part of the series “Legal or Illegal”. Please read that article first if you want understand the base of these arguments.
If we make a list of all the brainwashing done in today’s modern societies, Drugs will top them all in terms of time, money and effort spent on it. Well of course, if drugs can change your mind so much, then to counter its effect, the people must be brainwashed in the equivalent terms.
The mind altering effect of drugs cannot be matched by anything today in society, except for the brainwashing done to you against it. Take for example, imagine this, if I strapped you to a chair against your will, and proceeded to give you an injection of heroine, imagine your reaction against it. It would be similar to, if I strapped a heroine addict to a chair when he needed the fix most, and keep an injection full of heroine right next to him.
I mean it’s not like you would react the same way if I strapped you to a chair and made you eat a cake when you didn’t want to eat it.
Make no mistake, this is not a case FOR using drugs, this is a case for decriminalizing drugs. Every year, millions of dollars are spent on fighting the drug war, millions of people worldwide are sent to jails for committing crimes which harmed nobody.
Before I start, I want to make it clear; I have never used contraband in my life, not even one kash of Marijuana, or anything. For some reason that gives a more weight-age to my pro-decriminalization of drugs, because otherwise people just think that since someone has uses drugs, that’s why he or she is promoting legalization of drugs.
The first argument given against drug use is that it shortens your life, From 10 to 40 years as reported by the opponents of drug-decriminalization. Yet it hardly justifies the prohibition of usage of drugs like heroine. There are so many things which shorten your life, if you join the army, it statistically shortens your life, if you drink alcohol, it shortens your life, gambling shortens your life. My uncle was told by his doctor that if he wants to live longer he must stop doing business in stock market.
Unhealthy food shortens your life, and since people eat much more burgers then they use drugs, their quality of life goes down much more significantly than the drug users who are less in numbers. Sex shortens your life, traveling shortens your life, crossing the street shortens your life; WORKING shortens your life since working men live shorter than homemaker women.
The point is, despite of so many things which shorten your life, but people still choose to engage in these activities despite of knowing that they will have a shorter lifespan, and they are not banned by the law.
The next argument which comes up is that people who use drugs are unable to fulfill their financial and other responsibilities, but this again fails to make a case for banning drugs. If a man is incapable of fulfilling his responsibilities because he is out of job(not because of drugs, but say incompetence) does that mean we must ban unemployment, or ban getting fired from job, anyone who is fired from his job, must be thrown in jail for 5-6 years.
Should we ban out-of-town jobs because now a father is incapable of being physically present to his son’s ball game, thus unable to fulfill his responsibilities so must we ban out-of-town jobs? How about banning divorces for fathers, because this will make them physically incapable of fulfilling their responsibilities. Why don’t we make marriage like slavery, once you are married to someone, you must fulfill your responsibilities or else you will be thrown in jail?
But none of these things are a crime. Marriage is merely a contract, and it does not prevent either party from doing things
which are uncomfortable to the other party. People with responsibilities get brain damage, heart attack, and death from playing sports, but does that mean they must be banned from doing those things? How about govt creates a point system for each activity, and depending upon risk that activity will be given a risk rating, and depending upon the responsibilities upon you, you will be allowed or disallowed from doing that activity. The activities could range from anything, hunting, doing overtime, driving in rush hour, driving during the night, air-traveling, drinking, smoking, playing tennis, watching sports.
I do sound ridiculous, but I am merely pointing out at the ridiculous arguments given in support of banning drugs. Poison can get you killed, but we don’t ban poison.
If drugs can get you addiction, and might ruin your life, alcohol can also cause addiction, so why don’t we throw those people in jail who are addicted to alcohol, or why don’t we throw those husbands and fathers in jail who have ruined their lives because of alcohol?
Another argument thrown is that people commit crime in order to get money to get their next fix. Well alcoholics also commit crime in order to get money so that they can get dunk for the next night. UP is so notoriously famous for such crimes. In Rajasthan there is a place called “Malawa ka chora”(Thieves of Malwa) which is inhabited by muggers who would rob lone cars driving through that area after sunset so that they can get money to get drunk, but then the roads become safe again after 9PM because now the people have got drunk.
People commit crime for drugs, because of the price of drugs. The price of drugs is really high because of the ban on drugs. If the ban was lifted, then the prices will come down, even a guy who works a 9-5 job can afford to be high for the rest of the day. Just like alcoholics who drink every night and still manage to afford a house and take care of their families.
Those people who are addicted to drugs are unable to hold traditional jobs because they cannot afford drugs with what they earn from that job, so their most of the time is spent on stealing, robbing, murdering and prostituting.
In a hypothetical scenario despite of the fact that drugs are illegal, the addicts will have their bunch of problems. For example, the relative incapacitation following the drug use, the danger of over-dosing, although it would be lessened after legalization since now the drug can be administered by a doctor under careful supervision.
Also to consider the effects of cheap drugs, we can compare the situation of alcohol in India and in USA. In India alcohol is considered as a social evil and damages much more lives than it does in US, ignorant claim that in India people are less educated than US, but its nothing but ignorance about US culture. It’s just that in US the alcohol is quite cheap compared to in India. The government in India tries to control the alcohol trade through licenses, and because of this, cheap bootleg liquor is made in rural areas which ends up being poisonous and killing numerous people.
Last but not least, the medical usage of drugs, medical marijuana helps numerous cancer and AIDS patients. It helps to take away their pain. There are a few bone marrow cancer patients whose whole body
Objective Perspective: Drug usage is no different than alcohol usage, it makes you its addict, it renders you relatively incapable for some time, it can ruin your life, and it shortens your life considerably. Despite of that, drugs face some massive opposition from the society. We hear so many cases of some one’s son ruining his life under drug addiction, but statistically speaking its no more or less than number of people ruining their lives due to alcohol addiction.
Numerous people drink alcohol regularly and still live normal lives. Today when drugs are banned, numerous people do drugs regularly and still live normal lives but you will never hear about it, because it would be tantamount of suicide in today’s society.
And if you live in India, don’t forget, Bhang is illegal contraband in India, but it’s rarely pursued, and nobody will be arrested on Holi at least.
So if you had Bhang ke pakode, or with milk on Holi, you have had weed! Congrats! Did it ruin your life? Write in the comments.
Where to buy weed in New Delhi?
Pre-empting arguments:
- Chaos! Legalizing drugs will create chaos everywhere - I am sorry but this is a de facto argument given to whatever I suggest. It comes basically because of what psychologist describe as “Fear of the unknown”. If you think legalizing prostitution will create chaos in the society, well then think again because according to psychologists you are saying that because you are unable to envision such a scenario.
- Drugs ruin lives, I know a guy so and so, and his life was totally ruined by the drug addiction - Seriously dude, his life was not ruined because of drug addiction, it was more ruined because the drugs are banned. Drugs are legal in many European nations, the number of lives ruined actually comes down since legalization of drugs.
- I would like to see your brother getting addicted to cocaine and ruining his life - Honestly dude, I would get my brother help, if he wants it, even hire him a guy who carefully administers him a dosage regularly, everything as long as he wants the help. But if he does not want help, then he could have ruined his life with alcohol, hookers, strip clubs, child porn, fast food etc etc.

December 28th, 2008 at 9:33 pmI’ve been using marijuana for over 30 years on a near daily basis (I’ve stopped when unwell or in hospital). While I can accept it is not entirely harmless, it is far less harmful than many would have us believe. Importantly, for many it can bring enormous benefits - legalise now
